In these modern times, people have trouble eating healthy on a day-to-day basis because of all the hustle and bustle associated with work and school. So many people are tied to their desk sitting in front of the computer for hours on end during the day and do not have time to step outside the office and get lunch. That means that they will place an order with a deliver service or quickly run down the block to the nearest fast food restaurant. Eating like this day in and day out will cause people who cannot be active enough to gain unwanted and unhealthy weight around their stomach. Carrying too much weight around the abdomen area can cause serious health problems for men and women alike.

Too much weight around the stomach puts extra strain on a person’s heart, which can lead to serious medical problems such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and high blood pressure. The most dangerous of those conditions, high blood pressure, is considered the silent killer because symptoms of this condition do not arise until it is well developed in the body. Patients with high blood pressure will need to lower that pressure in order to avoid suffering a heart attack or a stroke during their lifetime.

What makes having too much weight around the stomach so dangerous is that once it is put on, it is even more difficult to take it off. Putting weight on is easy because of the binge eating but taking it off is incredibly difficult because not many people will want to exercise or eat right to remove the weight. Having too much weight around the area of the abdomen can lead to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and many other medical conditions. When the weight sits in the area of the abdomen it pulls on the chest of that person, putting incredible strain on the heart, causing it to work extra hard to pump blood throughout the body.

Men with too much weight around the stomach should begin a diet and workout regimen after consulting with their physician about the perfect regimen for each individual person. A doctor will be able to examine the patient and determine how much exercise the person can handle each day without causing too much strain on the heart until the weight around the stomach has dissipated. If the patient experiences chest pains or other problems during a workout, he should stop the workout immediately and talk to their doctor. Do not let these chest pains go untreated because they could be mild or they could be severe enough to be associated with a heart attack.

Too much weight around the stomach area can also cause men to be out of breathe when simply walking down the street or performing yard work because their heart is working so hard to pump blood throughout the body. Men with too much weight around the stomach could also develop certain forms of cancer, Type II Diabetes, sleep apnea, resistance to insulin, high triglycerides and other medical problems.

Sleep apnea is one of the most common causes of not getting a good night’s sleep today. Sleep apnea can be as dangerous as falling asleep with a lit cigarette in bed because if it is not diagnosed or treated properly it can severely injure a patient or even cause them to die during the night. Sleep apnea is defined as pauses in one’s breathing while sleeping. These pauses typically happen at any time during the night and can occur without warning. For the most part, people with sleep apnea do not know when the pauses in their breathing occur or how often it occurs. Instead, they will have to be told by their loved ones when it happened during the night.

An episode of sleep apnea is called an apnea. An apnea will can cause the person sleeping to miss one, two, or more breathes during the night when they are sleeping. These lapses in breath can last anywhere from five to 10 seconds at a time, causing the patient to wake up or even begin to choke during their sleep. Sleep apnea can only be diagnosed with a sleep study called a polysomnogram, which takes place during the night under the supervision of a doctor or another medical professional. A patient with clinically significant sleep apnea will experience five or more episodes per hour of missed breathes. There are three forms of sleep apnea that a patient can be diagnosed with; central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, or complex sleep apnea.

In central sleep apnea the breathing is obstructed by a lack of respiratory effort by the person sleeping. In obstructive sleep apnea the breathing is obstructed by a physical block to the airflow of the person despite the presence of respiratory effort of the person sleeping. In complex sleep apnea the person experiences a transition from central to obstructive during the night. As mentioned earlier, sleep apnea is rarely recognized by the person affected by the condition. Instead, they are alerted to their trouble breathing by others in the room with them at the time of their episode. Even upon awakening, people suffering from sleep apnea do not realize that they have missed breathes during their sleep or other signs of the condition. Sleep apnea can be present in patients for years at a time before it is ever diagnosed or noticed by another person.

Experts estimate that close to 20 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea each year. This equates to about one in every 15 Americans. These numbers make sleep apnea as prevalent in the country as suffering from asthma and diabetes is these days. Sleep apnea, once diagnosed, is treated most commonly with the use of a CPAP. A CPAP, or a continuous positive airway pressure device, helps the person with sleep apnea breathe freely during the night. The device will force air through the patient’s throat via pressure. A CPAP machine only assists the patient with inhaling. A BiPAP machine, used in the most severe cases, will assist the patient with both inhaling and exhaling.

It has become an all too common problem across the country for men to lose the weight that they have accumulated during their lifetime around their belly. Losing belly fat is a tough task to undertake because it is easier to put on the weight then it is to take it off. Weight around the belly can be gained when men eat too much, eat the wrong foods, or do not work out on a regular basis to keep their weight down. There are plenty of different diets and exercises a man can do to try to lose the weight they have around their belly. Too much weight around the belly can lead to serious medical problems such as heart disease, heart attack, stroke, diabetes and some types of cancer.

The first step in losing belly fat is for the man to throw out all the junk food in their fridge and pantry. If you do not want to throw away the junk food, you can donate it to a local food bank or charity. Junk food can prove the saying, ‘you are what you eat.’ Junk food that should be removed from the home includes cookies, sweets, chips, salsa and ice cream. All of these foods can lead to weight gain, especially if the person eating them is not active on a regular basis. Once the junk food is gone, your eating habits will slowly turn positive and junk food will vanish from your mind.

Another step that goes along with ridding the house of junk food is to stop having those late night snacks. The last bit of food you place into your body during the day should be dinner. Late nigh snacks cause the most weight gain around the belly because you eat the snack and then go to bed without walking around or performing any other type of exercise. Eating late night snacks means you are probably sitting on the couch, watching television, and just pigging out. Do not let this become a habit. If you cut out junk food and eating a late night snack you will see the weight fly off before you even begin to exercise.

The third and final step in losing belly fat in men is to begin exercising. There are plenty of exercises available these days for men to put into action in an attempt to lose the weight around their belly. These exercises include swimming, running, walking, lifting weights, cardio and playing sports. The sports can be organized or pickup games. Any exercise that gets the heart pumping is the perfect exercise for losing weight around the belly. The more the heart has to work to pump oxygen throughout the body the more weight will come off. Doctors and experts recommend dieting, eliminating junk food, and exercising as the best combination for losing belly fat. They do not recommend taking diet pills or taking part in crash dieting because these methods will not help you effectively lose weight around the belly.

Billions of people across the globe work jobs that have them at work during all different hours of the day. This means that many people will have to sleep during the day and go to work at night or sleep during the night and go to work during the day. Whatever your situation is, getting a good night’s sleep can mean the difference when it comes to being productive at work each day. Doctors and other experts recommend that people get anywhere from six to eight solid hours of sleep each day so that they can concentrate during the day and live a healthy life. If people only sleep four hours per day they can jeopardize their health in more ways than one.

A good night’s sleep helps people be productive each day or stay alive when driving their vehicle to and from work, school, stores and home. If you do not get enough sleep each night and are on the road for a long periods you are in danger of injuring not only yourself but also the people around you. If you feel tired, you should not get behind the wheel of your vehicle. Instead, wait until you are more awake, or have someone else drive you to where you need to be. When you are driving, if you feel tired, do not hesitate to pull over into a parking lot and take a rest until you feel that you can safely operate your vehicle.

A good night’s sleep can also help the health of people worldwide. Doctors and other experts say that sleeping well at night can reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other medical conditions so long as you eat right and stay active during the hours of the day that you are awake. A good night’s sleep can make all the difference in the world the next day when it comes to being productive. If you do not get a good night’s sleep one night it is difficult to catch up on that lost sleep the next day or the day after that. It is almost impossible for anyone to catch up on missed sleep so take advantage of sleeping well when you can.

There are thousands of people across the globe today that suffer from a medical condition called restless leg syndrome. Restless leg syndrome is defined as an irresistible sensation to move one’s body to put an end to uncomfortable or odd sensations throughout the body. The most common time of the day for this to occur is when the patient suffering from this condition decides to go to bed. Almost all people with restless leg syndrome will have trouble getting comfortable at night, making them toss and turn all night long, depriving them of a good night’s sleep. This condition can be treated with different stretches, therapies, and even prescription drugs. If people with restless leg syndrome can get their condition under control then they will be able to sleep better at night.

Edema is a medical condition that affects thousands of Americans each year. Edema can be mild but it can also be so severe that if left untreated it can cause serious medical problems and could even lead to death in the most extreme cases. Anyone suffering from a bout of edema should consult his or her physician immediately for examination and treatment for edema. Edema is defined as the abnormal accumulation of fluid underneath the skin anywhere in the body. Edema used to be known as dropsy and hydropsy. There are five main causes of edema and they include the following:

An increased hydrostatic pressure

Within the blood vessels, a reduced oncotic pressure

Inflammation in the blood vessels

The lymphatic has its fluid obstructed

Water retaining properties of the tissues of the body have changed

There are a variety of different forms of edema, most of them associated with specific organs. The different forms of edema include the following:

Cerebral edema

Pulmonary edema

Edema found in the cornea associated with glaucoma

Periorbtial edema

Contact dermatitis

Myxedema

Feet

Lymphedema

There are various causes of edema, some of which include the following:

Medicines

Standing or walking a lot when the weather is warm

Heart failure

Lymph node problems

Too much salt in one’s diet

Sunburn

Kidney disease

Cirrhosis of the liver

Pregnancy

One of the most common forms of treatment for edema, of any type, is diuretics. The following is a list of the most common diuretics used in pills today:

Chlorothiazide (Diuril)

Hydrochlorothiazide

Metolazone (Zaroxolyn)

Bumetanide (Bumex)

Ethacrynic acid (Edecrin)

Furosemide (Lasix)

Torsemide (Demadex)

Amiloride

Triamterene (Dyrenium)

Eplerenone (Inspra)

Spironolactone (Aldactone)

There are side effects associated with taking diuretics for the treatment of edema. Those side effects include one or more of the following:

Increased cholesterol

A rash

Joint disorders

Low sodium in the blood

Impotence in males

Increased blood sugar

Breast enlargement in males

Menstrual irregularities

Gout

If women suffer from edema during their pregnancy, typically swollen ankles or swollen feet, then the woman should sit with her legs elevated while avoiding lying on her back to help improve the blood flow throughout the body and decrease the swelling associated with edema. Another complication with edema if left untreated is that the skin around the area becomes worn down and fragile the longer edema goes untreated. If that area of the skin were to be burned, cut, or scraped it will have trouble healing and has an increased risk of developing an infection.

Anyone suffering from edema should visit their doctor as soon as possible if any side effects of the condition continue to linger even after treatments have been administered. These side effects could cause other serious medical problems and maybe even lead to death if left untreated altogether.

There are a lot of different dietary supplements out there, and people are always telling us how this one is good for that, and how that one does this, but how do we know which ones really work? There are so many of them out there, and no one has the time or the money to try them all out to see which ones will actually do what they say they will do. Not to mention the courage it would take you to trust your body with whatever is in those supplements!

One thing that we’ve been hearing for a while now is how green tea is great for you. While green tea may not be considered a supplement by some people, anything that you are taking for health reasons could be looked at as a supplement. Green tea is well known as a metabolism booster and a weight loss aid, and those two things have made the tea a very popular supplement with dieters. You can even buy it in capsule form now, to make taking it a lot easier. Especially considering that to get the full benefits of weight loss, you would have to drink a few cups a day. No one has time to be going back and forth to the bathroom all day, so many people prefer to take green tea pills.

Green tea also gives you a great energy boost. People who drink it regularly (or take the green tea capsules faithfully) have reported having a lot more energy than they had before they started with the green tea. Boosting your metabolism will always give you more energy, and that is how green tea works. This dynamic tea does have caffeine, which tends to worry some people, but never fear, green tea doesn’t have near enough caffeine in it to keep you up at night or anything like that! Its caffeine amounts are miniscule when compared to the amount of caffeine in coffee, or even black tea.

The newest benefit to drinking green tea was recently discovered by some scientists who were looking into bone health. Apparently, green tea can aid in bone health by making bones stronger and healthier. It is also reported that the tea helps to prevent osteoporosis, and may even be beneficial for persons who are already suffering from the bone disease. If you are over the age of 50, or osteoporosis runs in your family, or you already have osteoporosis, (or you can say yes to all 3!) you should definitely consider adding green tea to your daily diet. Again, if you simply don’t have the time to be making several trips to and from the bathroom, you can find a few different brands of green tea capsules in your local health food store. However, green tea pills can be expensive, especially when compared to the low price of the regular green tea, so you may want to reconsider those bathroom trips! In fact, all of that liquid running through your body is great for the health of your kidneys!

There must be hundreds or even thousands of different diets out there; diets that promise miraculous results, diets that restrict food intake, diets that are based on supplements, and now, we have a diet that is based on your blood type! This diet is one of the newer ones, and people are seeing results on it. The diet has as many different eating plans as there are blood types, because the creator of the diet, Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo, author of the book, “Eat Right 4 Your Type,” thinks that you should be eating according to your blood type.

Basically, the blood type diet boils down to the different foods that work for the different blood types. If you have Type A blood, you should only eat a vegetarian like diet that is low in fat and high in fruits and vegetables, while the Type B blood type people should follow a more omnivorous diet, while balancing between plants and meats. People with Type AB blood should be strict vegetarians, but Type O blood people can have the most diverse diet of all, while staying away from dairy, nuts and wheat.

In his book, Dr. D’Adamo says that the reasons for all of these restrictions are because people are more prone to certain diseases and ailments depending on the type of blood they have. The kinds of food you eat has a lot to so with how you are preparing your body to fight off diseases, and if you eat to prevent the things that you are already prone to because of your blood type, you are giving your body a good head start on the fight. In fact, if you eat right for your blood type, you will hopefully never have to fight these diseases at all!

If you need a few scientific studies to be backing a new diet before you will consider trying it, then this diet is not the one for you. To date, there haven’t been any studies completed on the blood type diet, and it doesn’t look like Dr. D’Adamo will be conducting any studies on it any time soon. However, even though there haven’t been any studies, this diet still promote healthy eating, and dieters don’t have to count calories or weigh their food portions, which has made this eating plan a popular one amongst some dieters.

If you have food sensitivities and allergies to the foods that you are supposed to eat for your blood type, I would not recommend following this eating plan. I would also recommend that you talk to your doctor about it before beginning this diet, as with any other diet out there. If you have Type AB blood, and you have a weakness for hamburgers, I would say that restricting something you love completely, will only set you up for failure, so I recommend setting up a cheat meal once every 2 weeks or so, and having that hamburger – not too often of course, but cheating every once in a while will help you to stick to the healthier eating plan.

Dieting is a topic that we love to discuss and talk about, but hate to actually act on. Diets and dieting is probably one of the most discussed subject in North America, other than health, which usually goes along with dieting anyway, making dieting truly the number one topic in this country. Think about it: how many times have you talked and / or thought about the subject in the last week? Or for that matter, in the last few hours? Probably more than you realize! Now, how many times have you actually acted on your dieting talk and intentions? Probably not as much as you realize…

When it comes to dieting, it is always better to do it with someone else. If you have a family, it would be even more helpful to do it as a family, because it never works for one person to be eating one way while still having to cook another way for the rest of the family! When I talk about dieting as a family, I don’t mean putting your 3 year old on the Jenny Craig diet or dragging your entire family out to Weight Watchers every week! I’m talking about making good lifestyle and eating choices together as a family, instead of just one person struggling to do it on their own.

There are ways to get your whole family involved in making healthy choices, and if you are apprehensive about some family members reaction to a lifestyle change, there are ways to do it without them even knowing what you are doing! The first thing you need to think of is how to make it fun. Kids (and adults too) are more apt to stick to something and want to do it if there is fun involved. Making healthier lifestyle choices may not sound like fun, but when you incorporate fun activities into it, changing your family’s lifestyle can be one of the more fun things you’ve ever done as a family.

When it comes to healthier eating choices, you can try having different theme nights each week, where you can learn about a different culture at the same time as trying out different foods. You can even get everyone to dress up in the same type of clothing that the culture wears, and have a few (healthy) dishes from the country you are studying that week.

Another way to get your kids involved is to allow them to help out in the kitchen. Kids, especially younger kids, love to help out, and it makes them feel important and special to be included in your life this way. Let them help you out in the kitchen, and talk to them as you are preparing meals together about how nutritious the potatoes they are peeling are, and what those carrots do for their bodies. You can even make a chart as a family of all the foods you like to eat, and what they do for the body. Include the unhealthy foods that are enjoyed by your family in this chart, so they can see the unhealthy effects they have as well.

We in America are the most obese that we have ever been in history, yet we are also the most obsessed about dieting than we have ever been before. I would call this situation an oxy moron. (Google it…) It just doesn’t make sense that a society so caught up with dieting and diet foods could be also be known as the fattest country in the world, yet it is true! There are more diet plans, diet supplements, diet drugs, diet programs, diet DVDs and diet foods out there than at any other time in the history of the world. That is a lot of diet products, and a lot of people are constantly on these products, hoping to she some weight.

How is it then, that we are not the thinnest and healthiest country in the world? Could it be that all of these diet products are not good for us? Could it be that all of the diet foods out there are designed to make us fatter? Could it be that the majority of companies out there promoting these products are only in it for the money? I think it could be! There certainly is money to be made in the diet industry and people and businesses everywhere are taking advantage of it.

Many of these diets and meal plans have some good things about them that can make you healthier if you choose. The plans that teach about healthy living and healthy eating are the best ones, because they give you the tools to be able to continue on after the plan ends. These types of plans work because they operate more on a lifestyle change than a diet. Diets don’t really work, and the diets that come with food plans? These are the worst!

When you are on the diet, and faithfully following their food menu, or even eating their trademark food brands, the weight should come off, as long as your metabolism reacts the right way to the new menu. However, what happens when you are finished? Ultimately, no one continues to eat off of the menu, and if the diet you chose only allowed you to eat their foods, chances are you won’t be able to afford to eat those foods for life. The result? You will ultimately gain the weight back, turning you into a “yoyo” dieter.

One prime example of this kind of diet is Nutri-system. When you are on the Nutri-system diet, you have to pay for 3 meals and 3 snacks per day until you have reached your goal weight. I’m sure that you have seen their commercials on TV, so you will know how expensive it is. I would like to talk to people who have gone on this diet, a year after they finished and see how many people have managed to keep the weight off. I would hazard a guess that not many have, unfortunately. The key to losing weight and keeping it off is a healthy combination of the right foods and regular exercise.

Dieting is one of the number one topics that we think and talk about most often these days, especially for people who live in North America. Perhaps this is because it has become such a health issue for us, because America is the fattest country in the entire world! I guess we should be thinking about it, especially because people are dying every day as a direct and indirect result of obesity. One of the things we hear and talk about a lot is the different types of fats and which ones to avoid.

When we hear about fat, we tend to think about the fat on our bodies – the kind of fat that we want to lose! However, the subject of fat covers a lot more than just body fat – it also covers what kinds of fats contribute to unhealthy body fat, and what types are good fats. Yes, there are good fats, and if we can learn to avoid the bad kinds and eat the good fats, we will be on the road to better health and smaller bodies.

The country of Denmark has recently banned trans fats. Let’s stop there for a minute. A country actually banned a type of fat? That is taking it to the extreme right? Especially since we in America eat trans fats every day, and a lot of our regular foods contain amounts of trans fats. However, maybe it takes something extreme to effectively make changes towards healthier lifestyles and choices. Maybe if America were to ban trans fats we would be a lot healthier. Who know? Maybe that one choice alone would take us down a couple of notches on the world’s fattest countries competition!

Trans fats are mostly found in fast foods such as burgers and fries, and in junk foods like chips, cheezies, and the like. All of the foods that we are addicted to in out Western society. Unfortunately, all of these foods also taste really, really good, and we will not want to give them up so easily. However, I am sure that the people of Denmark still enjoy some junk foods every now and again – they just eat things that are trans fats-free now. There are some junk foods out there that don’t have any trans fats, and take some extra time in your shopping to search these foods out the next time you have a craving for soe chips.

Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids are all classified as good fats, and they are really healthy for your body. They also aid in weight loss, and healthy skin and bones. These fats are found in fish (salmon is one of the best sources) nuts (like almonds) and some beans. You don’t have to go overboard with these fatty acids, and completely change all of your eating habits to get them. All you have to do is have fish 1 or 2 times per week, and change some of your snacks to include healthily prepared nuts.
