Question: I have been taking some natural herbal remedies for depression, in particular St. John’s Wort, but they don’t seem to be as effective as they once were. My low mood is getting really bad and some days I don’t even want to get out of bed. My girlfriend suggested thinking about taking
Celexa, which is what she takes for her depression. I’m a bit reluctant because I’ve heard the side effects can be brutal. Is this true?
Answer: Unfortunately, with many types of prescription drugs, there are some side effects that cannot be avoided and this is the case with
Celexa. This type of antidepressant is called an SSRI and is prescribed to treat major depressive illnesses in adults. If it is taken by anyone under the age of 24 there is an increased chance of suicidal thoughts and must be monitored closely. Anyone taking this drug may experience an increase in this type of behaviour during the first two weeks of treatment and, if this is the case, should report it to their doctor immediately.
For most people taking an SSRI, the side effects will be fairly mild and should disappear after the first month of beginning treatment. However, they can still be unpleasant particularly if they include dry mouth, nausea, light-headedness and an increase in urination. It is important that the patient should make regular visits to the prescribing doctor so that they can check for any improvement or changes in behaviour and symptoms and then adjust the dose accordingly. It should also be noted that it can be dangerous to continue taking a herbal depression remedy while taking a prescription drug and at the very least, advise your doctor if you are doing so.
However, you must remember to follow the recommended use that come with the product in order to achieve maximum results with these products. You'll often find different all natural anti-depressants containing a confusing array of ingredients. You should definitely look for a product that contains ingredients like Kava Kava, 5-HTP, Valerian, GABA, and L-Theanine which have clinical proof supporting their effectiveness. More importantly, not all products contain the quality and/or quantity of necessary ingredients to effectively minimize depression or anxiety symptoms such as fatigue, feelings of hopelessness and sadness, loss of pleasure, feelings of jitteriness or worry. That's why you'll need to do a little bit of research to find the best, most potent brand for your needs.
